17,000 people broke fast on the first day of Ramadan in Sultanahmet

About 17,000 people broke fast with the cannonball fired by the Artillery Unit under 1st Army Command during the iftar program organized by Fatih Municipality in Sultanahmet Square on the first day of Ramadan. 

Organized in Sultanahmet Square with the collaboration of Istanbul Governorate, Fatih Municipality and Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ICOC), the iftar program drew a lot of attention from citizens. Accompanied by families of martyrs and veterans as well, the iftar program began with chanting of Quran. Attending the iftar program where the Ottoman army band briefly performed, Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya, Fatih District Governor Kaan Peker and Fatih Municipality Mayor M. Ergün Turan broke fast together with the citizens after the Artillery Unit under Mechanized Infantry Brigade Command fired cannon.

 “We wanted to share the spiritual climate with all residents of Istanbul”

Speaking in the first iftar event, Fatih Municipality Mayor M. Ergün Turan said, “Today we organized various events in Sultanahmet Square, world’s ground zero and the merging point of civilizations, where we fired the first cannon of Ramadan, to merge our hearts as one. Thereby we wanted to share the spiritual atmosphere in Sultanahmet Square with all residents of Istanbul. Firing the traditional iftar cannon, we celebrated the first iftar with you in our glorious Istanbul”.

In addition to residents of Fatih and Istanbul, many visitors coming from within Turkey and abroad to Sultanahmet Square enjoyed the spiritual atmosphere in the iftar platform and broke fast with deep reverence.
