Volunteer Tourism Ambassadors Begin to Work

450 volunteer tourism ambassadors aged between 14 and 30 began to work following the ceremony under the scope of “Volunteer Tourism Ambassadors” project, which was commissioned to assist tourists visiting the historical and cultural locations of Fatih.

Volunteer Tourism Ambassadors Project, commenced by Fatih Municipality in order to help tourists visiting the historical, social and cultural locations of Fatih is running for the 10th time. 1,500 students applied to the project, where 450 Volunteer Tourism Ambassadors who successfully passed the written and verbal interviews began to work in 6 areas, namely Sultanahmet, Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern, Divanyolu, Grand Bazaar and Eminönü.

Fatih Municipality Mayor M. Ergün Turan, Istanbul Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Coşkun Yılmaz, Ak Party (Justice and Development Party) Fatih District President Orhan Narin, Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ICOC) Board of Directors Member Bahadır Yaşik, Fatih Municipality deputy mayors, assembly members, tourism ambassadors and many citizens attended the ceremony, which was held in Hagia Sophia Square for the commissioning of Volunteer Tourism Ambassadors.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor M. Ergün Turan said the project was intended to help the tourists who came to visit the Historical Peninsula of Fatih from across the world. Stating that tourism is very important for a country’s development, economy and welfare, Mayor Turan highlighted the importance of helping tourists and the significance of the responsibility of young people who will assume the duty of representing Turkey.

 “Young people have been really interested in this project for 10 years”

Mentioning there are many historical sights to be seen in Fatih and the project is important in this regard to assist the tourists, Fatih Municipality Mayor M. Ergün Turan said, “Turkey’s tourism has been developing since 2000s. There is a growing tourism potential in Istanbul. Young people have been really interested in this project for 10 years. 1,500 young persons from various cities in Turkey applied for this project and 450 of them took part in it as a result of written exam and interview. Young people aged between 14 to 30 can apply to this exemplary project. Usually people at the age of 14 to 20 become “Volunteer Ambassadors” for tourism in Turkey. They translate for tourists in many languages, particularly in Spanish, Italian, Russian, Arabic and English and are able to resolve their problems using these languages. At the same time, young people of any profession or educational background thus find an opportunity to practice their language here. These experiences are memorable for them. We also get great feedback from the tourists”.

Following the speeches, 450 students who were chosen from among 1,500 students and succeeded in written and verbal exams moved to their work locations to assist the tourists. Volunteer Tourism Ambassadors will be helping tourists until September 7, Saturday in English, German, Arabic, Spanish, French, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Italian, Persian and Chinese languages. There are one general coordinator and 6 supervisors on site. Tourism Ambassadors who complete 30 days of work are given a certificate as well as a symbolic pocket money. A museum card will be given to Tourism Ambassadors who are accepted to the project as a gift, which they can use for a year.
