Prof. Dr. Nabi Avcı, Former Minister of National Education, Culture and Tourism and Eskişehir Deputy advised young people to prefer local authors for reading novels.

2019-2020 academic year opening of Fatih Municipality Sulukule Art Academy was performed with the attendance of Prof. Dr. Nabi Avcı. Alongside Nabi Avcı, the opening ceremony was also attended by teachers and students. A discussion titled “Culture, Education and Art” was made and it continued in the form of questions and answers. Highlighting the importance of reading books, Deputy Avcı mentioned that students should primarily choose local authors when they read novels. Deputy Avcı advised students to read Sait Faik Abasıyanık, a notable name in Turkish story writing and said, “Make sure to read a story or two from Sait Faik, as it's like medicine and you’ll find that you want to read more from him”.

“Make A Habit Of Reading Books”

Prof. Dr. Avcı further said, “Author Mustafa Kutlu actually tells of your story in Istanbul and I'm sure you’ll find something from yourself if you read his work. If you don’t like it, then read comics, just make sure that you read something. Make a habit of reading books. When we were young, we used to read Teksas Tommiks. Marvel is a franchise of American origin, let the kids in New York read those comics but Marvel is a bit foreign to Istanbul. There are comics of Istanbul, you can read them. Make sure to have a hobby. And keep a journal. I look back and I wish I had kept journals when I was a kid. Now they would be such a treasure. That’s because time goes by and lives keep changing”.

“Have a Hobby”

Avcı mentioned that children are the future and they should have a hobby in a branch of art or literature and said, “Having an interest in a subject brings a discipline into your life. Be it painting, music, literature or sports, wherever you are successful, you should take it serious, and know that in doing so, you can be successful in other areas too. Hence, reading books is key to this success. One of the major issues we observe in children is that, unfortunately, they can’t express themselves very well. The reason why we argue or fight frequently is because we fail to express ourselves. Why can’t we express ourselves? That’s because we can’t speak Turkish well. In this sense, we need to read the right books so that we can express our concerns properly”.

At the end of the program, Former Minister Avcı toured Fatih Municipality Sulukule Art Academy and had his pictures taken with the students.
