Yedikule Fortress, one of the most important historical buildings of Istanbul, comes to life again by preserving its historical identity with the restoration works carried out. Fatih Masjid, which was built by the order of Mehmed II and has the architectural features of the Ottoman period, was opened for worship after a long period of meticulous work.
The mosque, which is referred to as ‘Abu'l Fath Mosque’ in Seyahatname by Evliya Çelebi and is one of the important building blocks of Yedikule Fortress, has undergone a restoration process in accordance with its original. Within the scope of the works carried out in line with the projects approved by the Conservation Board, the structural texture of the masjid was restored by preserving the foundation and the minaret, which survived up to the level of the minaret balcony.
The restoration process was not limited to Fatih Masjid. The fountain adjacent to the masjid, which is an integral part of the historical texture, was restored to its original function. This fountain, which is one of the important examples of Ottoman water architecture, has been put back into use as it was in the past. Thus, this historical area in Yedikule Fortress gained integrity in terms of both worship and social life and strengthened its place in the cultural memory of the city.
These restoration works carried out by Fatih Municipality are not only a building repair, but also an indicator of respect for historical heritage. The projects aiming to preserve the historical texture of Yedikule Fortress and carry it into the future bear the traces of the conquest of Istanbul.
Fatih Municipality continues to bring the traces of the past to the future by acting with the vision of keeping the cultural and historical heritage of the city alive. These works carried out in Yedikule Fortress indicate that such projects will be realised in the future as a result of the determination to preserve the historical texture of Istanbul.
