Kaid Mustafa Agha Fountain Restored
Within the scope of the restoration of Kaid Mustafa Agha Fountain in Sümbül Efendi Neighbourhood, the cement mortar walls on the rear and side facades were removed and rebuilt with brick beams and rubble stone masonry.
18 June 2024The fountain is located on Hacı Hamza Mektebi Street. It is understood from the inscription that it was built in 1570 by Kaid Mustafa Agha. Adjacent to the west of the fountain, there is a water reservoir with a double-sided vault. It is not clearly known what kind of a building the vaulted structure was part of. The traces of the structure were evaluated by expert consultants and it was stated that the vaulted structure was a water reservoir built in the Ottoman Period and that it was dated earlier than the adjacent fountain.
It is known that there is a marble mirror stone in a niche with pointed ogee arches on the front façade of the fountain and an inscription on it. The inscription has not survived to the present day, but can be seen in old photographs.
As part of the restoration works, the marble basin of the fountain, which was under the road elevation, was uncovered and the front façade of the fountain was raised above the road elevation. The cement mortared rubble stone walls on the rear and side façades of the fountain were removed and rebuilt with two rows of brick beams and one row of rubble stone masonry. The unqualified repairs in the vaulted structure and the inappropriate chamber door opened later were removed and repaired in accordance with the original. In the back section of the vaulted structure, foundation traces were reached by excavation and wall fabrications were carried out accordingly. The top cover, which was statically problematic, was repaired by reinforcement. The restored fountain was reintroduced to water.
