Restoration of Fatih's Beloved Yedikule Fortress Continues
Yedikule Fortress is being restored on the one hand and hosting events organised by Fatih Municipality on the other.
13 March 2023The restoration began in 2020 with the consolidation of the minaret of Fatih Masjid, which is known as the oldest masjid in Istanbul, and the sections of the 1500-year-old city walls that collapsed due to natural conditions were consolidated. The minarets, which are the urban metaphor of Istanbul, appeal to its dream identity, and form the "hatt-ı bâlâ", the silhouette of the historical peninsula, are also being restored. In the near future, it is planned that the cone on the entrance door will be replaced and its place in the silhouette of Istanbul will become more prominent.
The Fortress as a Cultural Heritage
Yedikule Fortress has an important place for both Fatih and Istanbul and is a precious heritage that must be passed on to future generations. Following the conquest of Istanbul, Mehmed the Conqueror had Yedikule Fortress built as an inner fortress in Istanbul between the years 1458-1460. One of the important features of the Fortress is that it houses the 1600-year-old Golden Gate and the 563-year-old masjid. The Yedikule Fortress, which is the point where the monuments reach the sea, is known as the largest green area after Topkapı Palace with its 16 acres of land.
