Restoration of the Aspar Cistern Underway

Fatih Municipality Yavuz Selim Life Centre has been serving the people of the district for many years as a social area that houses many facilities. The Aspar Cistern, known as the historical Çarşamba Çukurbostan, is undergoing the most comprehensive restoration of its history by Fatih Municipality.

History of the Aspar Cistern:

Three of the four open cisterns in Istanbul are located within the borders of Fatih. The 5th century cisterns built in Suriçi (Walled City) are Çapa Makios Cistern, Karagümrük Aetius Cistern and Çarşamba Aspar Cistern, which is currently under restoration and known as Çukurbostan today. While Aspar Cistern had a functional use as a water reservoir in its period, it has lost its function at present. It was used as an orchard during the Ottoman Period and became a quarter in time. Then, as a result of a fire that broke out at that time, the quarter was destroyed and remained empty for a long time. Today, it still serves as an activity area where the people of the region lean back against the walls of history, relax and socialise.
