Vefa Square Fountain Regained Water
Joints of Vefa Square Fountain at Molla Hüsrev Neighborhood are repaired in the scope of restoration of the fountain and missing parts were completed. Basin that remained below pavement was recovered and platforms were rebuilt.
19 September 2024The fountain is located at the corner of Katip Çelebi Avenue and Azep Askeri Street, at Vefa Square that is one of the cultural assets of Istanbul under protection. While there is no certain information on the date of construction and patron of the fountain without an epitaph, it is considered to have been built as a part of the Şeyh Vefa Campus that was constructed by Fatih Sultan Mehmet. The fountain with cut stone front façade and rubble stone masonry side façades has a reservoir and square plan.
Innovative and unqualified interventions were removed from the fountain in the scope of restoration works. Following plant and surface cleaning cement-based materials on façades were removed and authentic stones were revealed. Joints of the fountain were repaired and missing parts were completed. The authentic basin that partially remained below the level of pavement was recovered and absent platforms were rebuilt. Following completion of landscaping the fountain regained water.
